A: They’re a tough algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It tends to grow on the shadier north side of homes.
With today’s higher oil prices, shingle manufacturers have reduced the petroleum content and have replaced it with a record high percentage of limestone filler. 20 years ago, an asphalt shingle only contained 10 – 15% limestone filler. Today, that number is over 50%. Airborne algae LOVES to feed on limestone.
